What is the Training Like?

In an age of experimentation, innovation and modification, training in Kuntao Matjan is strictly traditional. Students will spend six to eight months on traditional stance and footwork training, rolling and breakfalling techniques, various parrying, striking and kicking techniques. As their foundation develops they learn elementary counter-grappling, self-defence and escaping techniques called buah bela diri. By the end of the first year, students will have covered the lions share of the self-defence techniques and learned three short but intense solo choreographed exercises called jurus, superficially similar to the kata in karate. Students will also learn a range of breathing exercises similar to qi gong and basic meditation. Advanced training deals with more sophisticated empty hand fighting skills, self-defence against and with traditional weapons, meditation and spiritual training, traditional Indonesian therapeutic massage (urut asli) and the use of herbal medicines.
